Whether you’ve decided to give Veganuary a go or have been plant-based for years, there are always a few surprising products that you never thought to switch. Believe it or not, a lot of laundry detergents contain some sneaky animal derived ingredients. But never fear – we're here to give you the lo down.

WHY AREN’T ALL LAUNDRY PODS VEGAN?

All detergents contain surfactants – chemicals that help to remove dirt from the surface of products. Although there are loads of plant-based surfactants out there, some brands still opt to use processed tallow (animal fats).

Bio laundry detergents also contain enzymes, which break down the stains and make them easier to remove. These enzymes can be manufactured in a lab or in plants, but some detergents will contain enzymes obtained from animals instead. A common example of this is lipase, which is produced in the pancreas of animals (most often pigs).

WHERE CAN I GET VEGAN LAUNDRY PODS?
The good news is that there are loads of options out there for vegan laundry pods, and some that are also planet-positive in their packaging, carbon footprint, and ingredient list.

Our Laundrythings are single-use-plastic free, non-toxic, and carbon neutral. We chose to produce powder pods (rather than gel) as they’re lighter and more compact (which reduces their carbon footprint) as well as requiring less water to manufacture. And just because they’re planet-positive doesn’t mean they’re any less powerful.

Sound up your alley? Why not give our Laundrythings a go?
